Meme Gacha! is a mobile collecting game developed and published by Lunime. It was released on 1 April 2018 for Android devices and 22 May 2018 for iOS devices. Meme Gacha! is a gag game dedicated to celebrate April Fool's Day. It involves collecting randomly selected memes based around the characters appearing in the company's earlier game titles. The memes in question were created by the Lunime staff and members of the Lunime community.
Gameplay
Upon starting Meme Gacha!, players are greeted by the game's main menu, where they can start pulling memes by pressing on the 'Gacha' button. The goal of the game is simple, as opposed to earlier titles developed by Lunime - players have to collect as many memes as they can and subsequently obtain the entire meme collection. There is no in-game currency available in the game, thus the pulls do not cost anything.
When a meme is pulled, a random voice can be heard; it's either a cheer of the rarity the meme belongs in, a tease or a reference to another popular joke. Once players collect all the memes, they are granted access to the game's soundboard, which is located in the game's options menu. There, they can play around with the voices they had heard when using the gacha machine.
Development
On 30 March 2018, an untitled image was posted on the official Facebook group by one of the group's administrators. The photo featured two character silhouettes, along with a text that read "The World of Gacha is in danger..." and a date of 1 April 2018.[1] A day later, the same administrator uploaded a different picture, which simultaneously was the first direct mention of Meme Gacha!.[2] On the same day, the game was published on the Google Play app marketplace.
Two days after initial release, a contest dedicated to Meme Gacha! was announced in the Lunime Facebook group. Group members were invited to create memes based on the company's property while also complying to set rules.[3] The contest ended on 30 April at 12AM PST. Winners of the contest were announced on 14 May, following a game update, in which the winning memes were added.[4] On 22 May, the game was released for iOS devices.
According to Phantom, one of the community managers at Lunime, the game was developed in 3 days, as the lead developer challenged himself to create a fully fledged game in such time.[5]
